MURPHYSBORO — Aleatha E. (McLaughlin) Mifflin, of Murphysboro, passed away at 8:33 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County, Murphysboro, Illinois, at the age of 106 years, one month, and 13 days.

Aleatha was born on September 3, 1906, in Cora City, Illinois, to Murry McLaughlin and Pearl (Rea) McLaughlin. She started her teaching career in a one room school near Jacob, Illinois, called the “Mifflin School”. She retired from the Murphysboro School District, where she taught Spanish in the Junior High. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and a member of Royal Neighbors. Mrs. Mifflin was a member of Pate Chapel Church in Murphysboro, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years.

Aleatha married Russell Mifflin on May 11, 1929, in Murphysboro, and he preceded her in death on December 19, 1999. Her son, Charles Mifflin preceded her in death in 1998; and her son-in-law, Jack Bradley in 2008. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Murry McLaughlin Jr., Fred McLaughlin, Frank McLaughlin, and Cleo McLaughlin; and two sisters, Hyacinth Krawczyk and Ann Crisler.

She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Ann Bradley of Sparta; two grandchildren, Debra Mifflin and her husband David of Grand Rivers, Ky., and Cynthia Mifflin of Grand Rivers, Ky.; three great-grandchildren, Heather Mifflin, Amanda Mifflin and Caitlyn Mifflin, all of Grand Rivers, Ky.; one sister, Veneda (Sue) Costello of St. Charles, Mo.; three sisters-in-law, Beulah McLaughlin, Gladys McLaughlin, and Peggy McLaughlin, all of Murphysboro; and several nieces; and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 19, 2012, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Easton, Gregory McLaughlin, and Rev. John Pitchford officiating and burial at Murdale Gardens of Memory. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pate Chapel Church in Murphysboro, or to the First United Methodist Church in Sparta.
