Kentucky U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes was a proud Barack Obama delegate at the 2012 Democratic convention. She did not declare her independence from Obama then, but instead worked hard to help reelect him as president. Thanks a lot, Alison!
Grimes got her guy in the radical liberal Obama, but now she is desperately and deceitfully trying to distance herself from the man she so enthusiastically supported less than two years ago. Let's review the Obama record for which Grimes bears her share of responsibility.
The American economy actually shrank in the first quarter of 2014. The hard winter contributed to this contraction, and spring should bring a rebound, but the Obama recovery remains remarkably, indeed historically, weak.
Obama broke his repeated promise to reform the Veterans Administration. His secretary of veterans' affairs recently resigned amidst a sickening scandal of incompetence and deception that exposed Obama's outrageously inept management.
Despite having a constitutional duty to faithfully execute the laws, Obama regularly breaks them. He has done so repeatedly with Obamacare, but is becoming an ever more brazen tyrant.
Obama recently negotiated with terrorists to free five dangerous Taliban leaders from the Guantanamo prison camp in exchange for an American who apparently deserted and cost the lives of other soldiers who searched for him. The administration then sent National Security Advisor Susan Rice onto the Sunday shows to lie again, just as she did after the deadly attack on the American mission in Benghazi, Libya.
Rice amazingly claimed the American had "served the United States with honor and distinction." Many American soldiers who were in Afghanistan with him at the time vigorously disputed her claim. Seeking the soldier's release is understandable, but breaking the law by not consulting Congress, freeing five jihadists, and lying about the facts is disgusting.
Obama demonstrated more contempt for the Constitution and his oath of office when he recently said enforcing the law to deport some illegal immigrants was "not smart" and did not "make sense." This cavalier announcement accompanied revelations that his administration last year released 36,000 illegal immigrants who had deportation proceedings pending.
According to a USA Today story, the freed illegals included "193 people who had been convicted of homicide, 426 of sexual assault, 303 of kidnapping and more than 16,000 with drunken-driving records." This was not smart and did not make sense!
Next, Obama's Environmental Protection Agency released a carbon emission reduction plan that would devastate the Kentucky coal industry without actually even affecting global carbon dioxide levels. Obama previously admitted that his plan would cause electricity rates to skyrocket, but now the same man who fraudulently promised "if you like your health plan you can keep it" claims the new carbon restrictions will somehow reduce utility bills.
How about the deal for destruction of Syrian chemical weapons that Russian leader Vladimir Putin brokered after Obama retreated from his call for military action against Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad for crossing a disappearing "red line" by using chemical weapons? Assad is flouting it by failing to declare all his chemical weapons, missing multiple deadlines for destroying those he did declare, and launching attacks with chlorine gas.
A recent ABC News/Washington Post poll taken after Obama's defended his foreign policy in a speech at West Point (and after his team divulged the name of the CIA station chief in Afghanistan) showed more (50 percent) disapproving of his handling of international affairs than approving (41 percent). Nearly three-fifths (58 percent) believe Obama has covered-up facts about Benghazi.
In a television ad Grimes comically claims, "No matter who the president is I won't answer to them; I'll only answer to you." But she backed Obama, helped him get nominated, and worked to reelect him.
Her opponent, incumbent and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, has opposed Obama's leftist agenda every step of the way. McConnell did his best to make Obama a one-term president. Maybe that is why First Lady Michelle Obama says it is critical to elect Grimes.
Grimes also doubled down on her dealings with Senate majority leader Harry Reid, who is Obama's biggest legislative ally, especially in the "war on coal." She raised money with the anti-coal Reid in Washington right after he blocked McConnell's bill to stop the Obama carbon restrictions.
The slippery Grimes will not say whether she would have voted for Obamacare. She apparently opposes a bill to ban late-term abortions after 20 weeks. She cannot say how much her "jobs plan" will cost or how many jobs it will supposedly create. She cozies up to those who would sacrifice Kentucky's coal jobs on the altar of "climate change."
No wonder a recent Rasmussen Reports poll put McConnell ahead 48 percent to 41 percent. All of the 14 polls shown on the respected Real Clear Politics website have shown McConnell leading except for two Bluegrass Polls conducted for The Courier-Journal, WHAS-TV, the Lexington Herald-Leader and WKYT-TV. The Washington Post's "election lab" says there is a 97 percent chance McConnell will win.
Grimes wanted an Obama second term. She got it, and it has been a disaster. He was her man, so she, and unfortunately we, are stuck with him until 2017.
