Symphony's beer garden receipts have varied broadly over time

By DANIEL SENE Executive Director Paducah Symphony Orchestra

EDITOR:

In the wake of the media coverage of the Barbecue on the River conversations, patrons and friends have asked the Paducah Symphony to clarify the figures cited regarding sales and profits from the Beer and Wine Garden.

Over the past five years, the gross sales have averaged $35,849. This amount fluctuates greatly with weather for the event, and has been as low as $21,417. As to the bottom line, the net amount averaged $22,028 over the past five years, before payment of the fee to the festival manager and without the allocation of any cost for our staff time and overhead. The low point, or "risk of bad weather" number was $9,298 in 2009. These figures would obviously be lower after the allocation of all costs. This also does not include the 500-plus volunteer hours required to staff the Beer and Wine Garden.

The Beer and Wine Garden was a cornerstone fundraising event annually for the PSO for 15 years, and we are extremely appreciative to the community, the city, and the festival for the opportunity to have participated.
