Barbecue festival deserves support for good it does in our community

By DEE DEE WHITTAKER Paducah

EDITOR:

I would like to express my support for the organizers of the Barbecue on the River Festival, especially Susie Coiner, David Boggs and Carol Gault. I cannot begin to imagine the amount of work and stress they have endured through the years to grow this festival to the jewel it has become for our town and all the charities that benefit from the proceeds. Last year over $448,000 was given to charity through the efforts of these individuals and many other volunteers who came together for this weekend of fun and fellowship.

My hope is that the citizens of Paducah and McCracken County would support one another in a positive manner in order to retain events such as this in our community. I would say the same for the shop, BBQ & More, that occupies a storefront in lovely downtown Paducah. It's a wonderful boutique that attracts customers and helps keep things lively downtown.

In order for our city to thrive we need events such as this and stores like BBQ & More. We need people who are willing to pour their hearts and souls into projects they are passionate about in Paducah. I want my children to have reasons to stay in this community, to live and enjoy themselves.

I urge the public to stand up in support of this organization so that we do not cause undue hardship for people who are truly in need; people that are served by the likes of St. Nicholas Foundation, United Way, Starfish Orphan Ministry, McCracken County Humane Society, various schools, churches and youth sports teams.

There are no perfect people or circumstances and I can't profess to know all the details of every situation, but I do know I support people who work hard to bring good to so many in our area. I hope others in this community will support Barbecue on the River, Susie Coiner, Carol Gault, and David Boggs for their work through the years.
