NRA would not sponsor irresponsible firearms bill

By ROBERT FOWLER Calvert City

EDITOR:

In response to the Feb. 13 letter from Kenneth Lewis, as a former light weapons instructor for the U.S. Army, I share his concern that there is legislation pending that would allow "anyone" to have a permit to carry concealed by applying and paying the fee (without any testing or training). My experience as a basic training weapons instructor showed me the ignorance of the average 18- to 22-year-old in very basic firearms safety and operation.

I do, however, take issue with him and the good senator; the NRA that I have been a life member of since 1972 would not sponsor such an irresponsible piece of legislation, since one of the main tenents of the NRA is responsible gun ownership and use.
