Animal shelter working to find permanent solutions for issues

The dogs of McCracken County need our help. There have been articles and letters published in The Paducah Sun referring to problems at the McCracken County Shelter. I would ask everyone to realize that the employees can only work with what they have available. The shelter is overcrowded and the weather is making it very difficult to care for the dogs.

Everyone knows this has been a very severe winter. Last year the dogs were protected from wind, ice and snow by securing tarps to the outside of their kennels and an igloo doghouse. This was not a great solution but it worked. At the start of this winter the kennels were covered again in tarps. The high arctic winds not only tore the tarps but also twisted and broke some of the kennels. The response in the paper to this was talking about how bad the shelter looks. Let's worry more about keeping the dogs safe.

This year's extreme temperatures have made it necessary to move the dogs inside. These dogs are being kept in crates. This is a poor living condition but will keep them alive. As the weather starts to warm these dogs will again be moved outside. Tarps will need to be replaced and kennels will need to be replaced. Again this will be only a temporary fix to the problems.

I would like to encourage anyone who cares about animals to come to the county commissioner's planning meeting Feb. 19, 5:30 p.m., at the county courthouse. We need to find permanent solutions to the problems.

The number one priority needs to be providing good clean living conditions for the dogs while they wait to be adopted.
