Robert Emmett Ligon Jr.

LEXINGTON - Robert Emmett Ligon Jr., Lt. Col. Ret. Army, 80, of Lexington, husband of Marilyn Ann Standfield Ligon, died Sunday, June 15, 2014, at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore, Ky.

Born March 29, 1934, in Mayfield, Ky., he was the son of the late Emmett Ligon Sr. and Bessie Deaton Ligon. He was a graduate of Mayfield High School and received his bachelor's degree from Murray State University in 1956, graduating in the first ROTC class. While in the Army, he earned his master's degree from Central Michigan University. Lt. Col. Ligon served 23 years in the U.S. Army with two tours in Vietnam, receiving numerous awards and medals, including the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. After his military retirement, he was employed for 22 years with the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, the Fidelis Sunday School Class, and SOCS.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the Eisenhower Unit at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center for the kindness, compassion, and love they have shown over the past 27 months.

Survivors other than his wife include his son, Robert E. (Sandi) Ligon III, Atlanta, Ga.; stepdaughter, Kempa Lynn (Brian) Turner, Lexington, Ky.; stepgrandson, David Justin Taylor; stepgranddaughters, Ashley Ann Taylor and Brittany Dickson; and great-grandson, Zachary Joy Holder.

Lt. Col. Ligon was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Stone Ligon.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, Ky., by the Rev. Tom Grieb. Burial will follow in Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at the funeral home.
