Carly Marquess

Staff Report

Carly Renee Marquess, 27, of Paducah, KY., passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at 4:30 p.m. at West Valley Hospital in Goodyear, AZ.

Carly was born in Paducah KY., on January 07, 1987, to Dr. Carl Marquess Jr. and Lil McKinney Marquess. She was a middle child, having an older brother, Dylan, and a younger sister, Camille.

She attended Lone Oak High School. Sports were an important part of her life. She played varsity softball for 4 years at Lone Oak. She played varsity basketball in 9th and 10th grades. She was on the Lone Oak inaugural volleyball team and was elected to the all-district team her first year playing. She won multiple awards during her high school volleyball career.

She achieved most of her sports accolades for her water-skiing. She began skiing at 2 years old and progressed to many appearances on the podium at State, Regional, and National tournaments. Carly loved to be at the local ski lake and spent countless hours with her family and other Ski Nuts practicing her skills. She also enjoyed teaching others to ski. She was awarded with an athletic scholarship for water-skiing at the University of Louisiana in Monroe. She competed in the slalom, trick, and jump events with trick being her best event. While at ULM her water ski team won 3 Collegiate National Championships. She was fortunate to make many international friends while at ULM. Carly graduated from ULM with a degree in Criminal Justice.

Carly's full athletic potential was never realized because of the damage to her body from the ravages of Type 1 diabetes which reared its ugly head when she was 13 years old. She was on insulin from the time of her diagnosis. Unable to regulate her diabetes with insulin she underwent a pancreas transplant in 2011 at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN. The surgery was a success and she never had to have an insulin injection the rest of her life. But she did have to take a handful of anti-rejection drugs every day to keep her new pancreas alive.

While recuperating from her surgery she began working in her Dad's Ophthalmology office and continued to work there until her untimely demise.

Carly was a Christian woman who loved God and was strong in her faith. She read Bible scriptures daily. Carly loved her family and they loved her. She was a joy to be around with her pleasant personality and caring ways. She had a positive generous spirit. Her mom and dad realized they were blessed to have shared the last few years of Carly's life in close contact with such a loving child.

Carly was able to keep the transplant cycle going as she donated several of her body tissues for transplant upon her death.

She is survived by her parents, Dr. Carl and Lil Marquess, of Paducah, KY.; her sister, Camille Marquess, of Phoenix, AZ.; her brother, Dylan Marquess and wife Leann, of Tampa, FL.; her grandparents, Carl and Mary Helen Marquess, of Paducah, KY.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jack and Maye McKinney; her great-grandparents, Jim and Loueva Munal.

A memorial service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2014, at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah. Rev. Charles Moore will officiate.

Visitation will be held prior to the memorial service, Monday, April 28, 2014, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.
