William 'Jack' Tanner

METROPOLIS, Ill. - Mr. William "Jack" Tanner, age 92, of Metropolis, Ill., passed away at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Metropolis Rehab and Health Care Center.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014, at the Metropolis Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Louis W. Brinker will officiate.

Mr. Tanner was an electrician and retired from ICG Railroad. He was an Army veteran, serving his country in World War II. Jack was an avid golfer and liked to brag about his hole-in-one in October 1977. He was a member of the Metropolis First Baptist Church.

Jack is survived by daughter, Nancy Jill Meng and husband David of Metropolis; son, William David Tanner and wife Susan of Paducah, Ky.; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Moss of Los Alamitos, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, William H. Tanner; stepfather and mother, Art and Gladys (Jackson) Heil; wife of 65 years, Allene Tanner; and one sister, Helen Louise Houseright.

There will not be any visitation. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer's Association Greater Illinois Chapter, 320 E. Walnut St,. Ste A, Carbondale, IL 62901.
