Jean Moore Reed

Staff report

GRAND RIVERS - Jean Moore Reed, 88, of Grand Rivers, Kentucky passed away at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2014, at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Calvert City, Ky.

Although Jean worked in banking for many years, those closest to her knew she was a "homemaker" in the truest sense of the word. Her passion in life was to build a "home" for her children and grandchildren. She lived out of the spotlight and sought no recognition.

She was affectionately known as "Mama Jean" first by her grandchildren, then by a vast multitude of children and friends who she "adopted" as hers over the years. They were a testament that she lived her life in service to others. While she was dedicated to giving to others, she genuinely preferred nothing be done for her. At her request, the family honored her wishes to have no public visitation or service.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Reed Buchanon and husband Frank of Grand Rivers, Ky.; one son, David W. Reed and wife Vickie of Gilbertsville, Ky.; grandchildren, Jessica Reed Carr and husband Mark, Matthew Frank Reed Buchanon and wife Stephanie, and David Wayne Reed II and wife Hannah; a great-grandson, Jack Wayne Carr; a sister-in-law, Susie Moore; two nieces; and four nephews.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, J. Brett Buchanon; two brothers, Robert A. Moore and Muriel B. Moore; her parents, John Willie Moore and Alla Mae Brogan Moore; and Clyde Reed.

In lieu of flowers, it was Jean's request that contributions be made to fund scholarships for students with learning disabilities enrolled at Murray State University. Contributions may be sent directly to the Jean Moore Reed Scholarship Fund, Murray State University, 200 Heritage Hall, Murray, Kentucky 42071 or envelopes are available at Filbeck-Cann & King Funeral Home in Benton who was entrusted with her final arrangements.
