BROOKPORT, Ill. - James Presley "Big Jim" Lawrence, 90, of Brookport, Ill., passed away Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Massac Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Aikins-Farmer Brookport Chapel with Dr. James Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Metropolis Memorial Gardens with military rites.

Mr. Lawrence was a principal and superintendent at the Brookport schools, a member of Zion UCC, American Legion Post 306 and was a WWII veteran. He was also a member of the VFW and Elks.

James is survived by his wife of 24 years, Thelma Lawrence of Brookport; one daughter, Nancy Mahoney and husband Clint of Birmingham, Ala.; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Travis of St. Louis, Mo.; two stepsons, Jim Prevallet and John Taylor, both of Metropolis; four nieces; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles B. and Lora (Giltner) Lawrence; 1st wife, Imogene Lawrence; one sister, Helen Korte; and one brother, Vern Lawrence.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour Thursday, April 10, at Aikins-Farmer Brookport Chapel.

Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to: Zion UCC, 1132 Country Club Rd., Metropolis, IL 62960; or the Alzheimer's Association Greater Illinois Chapter, 320 E. Walnut Ste. A, Carbondale, IL 62901.
