St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities, which is why several thrift stores nationwide that assist people in need bear his name.
However, as is the case with all charitable organizations, what they can share depends on what they receive. That's where events like Groceries for Good come in.
The St. Vincent de Paul thrift store at 2025 Cairo Road serves 27 to 35 families a day.
"It takes lots and lots of food," said Brenda Hayden, vice president of the thrift store. "If it wasn't for Groceries for Good and ... things like that, I don't know what we'd do.
"Everything we sell (in the store) comes to help us to buy groceries here. We have a big job, but we love it."
Hayden walked back to the store's food pantry and showed shelves that were sparsely stocked.
"We're ready for Groceries for Good, let me tell you," she said. "Our shelves are very empty. (Donations from) Christmas in the Park and Groceries for Good will take us well into June."
