A Cadiz man was arrested after allegedly taking a police truck Sunday.

Lawrence McCarthy, 57, gained access to a police truck while authorities were responding to a fire at the Better Senior Living Home, police reported. He then left the scene at a high rate of speed while officers assisted in evacuating residents, police said.

Police said McCarthy crossed the two-lane bridge that crosses Lake Barkley and struck two vehicles on the west side of the bridge. Kentucky State Police are investigating the crash and the fire.

McCarthy was charged with auto theft over $10,000; theft of a firearm; first-degree fleeing police; speeding; reckless driving; resisting arrest; first-degree criminal mischief; first-degree assault; and first-degree wanton endangerment.

He was booked into Christian County Jail.
