Jeffery Roberts of Calloway County was appointed Monday to serve the rest of the term of the late David Harrington as county attorney.
Harrington died Aug. 11 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., from a gunshot wound sustained in Graves County, which sources said was self-inflicted.
"Jeff has served as an assistant for Calloway County Attorney David Harrington, and his appointment provides stability between now and the beginning of the next term," said Larry Elkins, Calloway County judge-executive. "I spoke to members of David's family and staff prior to the appointment."
Elkins also spoke with candidates running for the office in November prior to Roberts' appointment. Both candidates were willing to be appointed, but Elkins decided to appoint Roberts to retain stability in the legal community.
"I advised my decision was based primarily on stability, but also I did not want to inject myself in my official capacity into the election process," Elkins said. "I am grateful to Jeff Roberts for taking time from his private practice to serve in this position."
