Responsiblity, musicianship taught during band camp

By Becca Schimmelrschimmel@paducahsun.com

Paducah Tilghman High School marching band students are showcasing their dedication and commitment by heading back to school early for practice.

The students' day started at 8 a.m. every day last week and ended at 4 p.m. Band camp officially started one week ago for students in percussion and color guard, but all members of the band came together for the second week of camp. There are about 80 members in this year's marching band. Band director Patrick Saddler said students are learning the new fall show "Elemental," which draws inspiration from the four elements - earth, water, fire and air.

Saddler mentioned that band camp is beneficial to all of the students, but especially the freshmen.

"Coming to school early helps the freshmen because they already have a large group of people they know when school starts," Saddler said. "It helps them with the transition."

He said that it is not just about learning the show and becoming better musicians. They learn respect and how to be responsible by showing up on time and being accountable.

For returning band students, it is about the bond that they have with the other members and enjoying themselves.

"They feel like we are a family and they just love being together," Saddler said.
