Police scale back search for missing optometrist

BY LAUREL BLACK lblack@paducahsun.com

Police will scale back efforts to find a missing doctor in Livingston County after the fourth day of a fruitless search.

Emergency personnel from six counties and hundreds of volunteers searched by boat, helicopter and foot, but failed to find John P. Lyles, 60. The optometrist was last seen walking away from Marina Village, where he lives, at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Kenny Vincent, deputy emergency management director for Livingston County, said at 7:30 p.m. Saturday that he was scaling back on personnel devoted to the search.

He added that Lyles’ family agreed with the decision, and that he is working with them to investigate the case.

“It’s going to be up to the family on how we proceed,” he said.

Crews combed 3,764 square acres and 12 miles of shoreline twice over the course of Thursday and Friday, covering parts of Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, Canal Campground, Marina Village and Grand Rivers.

Lyles left all his personal belongings, including medication needed to treat a serious illness, at home. An email sent from his account around 3:30 Wednesday did not reveal his whereabouts or give any hints as to why he went missing.
