WKMS wins national awards

Staff report

WKMS won national awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and Public Radio News directors Inc. at separate ceremonies in Washington last week.

Todd Hatton, WKMS local host for NPR's "Morning Edition," and Chad Lampe, news director and assistant station manager, received the award for best radio documentary in 2013 at the National Press Club banquet for their documentary "Kentucky Dam - Power for the People."

A second place award in the Documentary category for small newsrooms in PRNDI competition was awarded to "West Kentucky Coal: People Places and Power."

Intern John Null won first place in the hard news feature category for his coverage of the 2013 Fancy Farm Picnic. Intern Austin Ramsey won second place in the soft news feature category for his story about a child processing through the family court system with the aid of Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Lampe also won election to the PRNDI board of directors as an at-large member for a two-year term during the business conference that included the awards banquet.
