Paducah Photo exhibit opens today

Staff report

Yeiser Art Center will host the Paducah Photo 2014 International Competition and Exhibition starting today through July 26, with a regional photography exhibit displayed at Maiden Alley Cinema at the same time.

The opening reception for the exhibition will be held at the Yeiser Art Center from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight.

The center selected 76 works for Paducah Photo 2014 from more than 300 entries submitted from around the world and will award $2,500 in prize money in the competition. Awards in the international category will be $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, $300 for third place and $100 each for two honorable mentions. Awards in the regional showcase will be $200 for first place, $100 for second place, $50 for third place and $25 each for six honorable mentions.

Mary Ann Redding, chairwoman of the photography department at Santa Fe University of Art and Design, served as juror of this year's exhibit. Redding said she was thrilled by the opportunity, and said that of her duties as an educator, administrator and curator, curating is her favorite way to spend time.

"Having the opportunity to jury Paducah's photography exhibition permits me an opportunity to see contemporary images that I might not otherwise view," Redding said. "I hope not only to select interesting individual images but also to put together a cohesive and strong exhibition for the Yeiser Art Center that continues your rich history of promoting the best in international photography."
