McCracken County Director of Pupil Personnel Russ Tilford has been named the superintendent of Lyon County schools.
He will start July 1 with a four-year contract, he said. Current Superintendent Quin Sutton was named as the new McCracken County superintendent in March and will begin his new post on the same date. Sutton had served as Lyon superintendent since 2008.
Tilford said he traveled to Lyon County on Wednesday to meet with staff members of the district and schools and felt at home immediately.
"I've had tremendous support in both districts," he said. "I'm excited ... Lyon County has quality schools, a great teaching staff and high test scores."
The Heath native started his career as an agriculture teacher in Lyon County schools and holds a bachelor's degree in agricultural education from Murray State University. Tilford moved to the McCracken County district 17 years ago, first as a teacher at Heath High School and then as assistant principal, before moving to the district's central office. He has served as director of pupil personnel for four years.
"Becoming a superintendent has been a goal of mine for some time, but it had to be the right opportunity," he said. "I wouldn't leave for just any opportunity. This one is unique because it's where I started my career."
McCracken school board chairman Jeff Parker said Tilford "will be missed and will be hard to replace."
McCracken Superintendent Nancy Waldrop agreed, adding: "Lyon County is going to be in good hands. He will be missed. Russ has been consistently excellent in his tenure with us."
