An emergency situation in Massac County that closed a portion of Mount Sterling Road with police and other emergency responders on the scene Sunday night was resolved without injuries early Monday, according to Illinois State Police.
State police said the Massac County Sheriff's Department responded to an incident about 6 p.m. Sunday at a residence in the Unionville community, several miles east of Brookport, Ill., in the 1300 block of Mount Sterling Road. The initial call to police referenced a domestic dispute involving a firearm. Family members of those involved also contacted police during the course of the investigation.
A man involved in an earlier wreck in Pope Count returned to his residence and locked himself in a room, police said.
The sheriff's office requested the support of Illinois State Police negotiators and officials from SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) for assistance. Following two hours of negotiations, about 2 a.m. Monday the man left the residence and was arrested, according to the news release from Illinois State Police District 22.
Police said the case has been forwarded to the Pope County State Attorney's Office for any traffic charges and the Massac County State Attorney's Office for any criminal charges. State police refused to disclose the names of those involved.
