Propeller Club to present pair of maritime awards

Staff report

The Propeller Club of Paducah will present two Maritime Persons of the Year awards and two scholarships to area students Saturday morning at the Seamen's Church Center for Maritime Education.

The program will be held at 10 a.m. at the center, located at Kentucky Avenue and Water Street. Maritime Person of the Year honors will be given to E.J. Abell, director of education at the River Discovery Center, and U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. Jacqueline Twomey, detachment chief at the Towing Vessel Center of Expertise. Scholarships will be awarded to Graves County High School senior Jessica McKenzie Bone and McCracken County High School senior Connor Tilford.

To honor U.S. Merchant Marine mariners lost in the line of duty, a wreath will be placed on, and retrieved from, the waters at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio rivers following the presentations.

Also participating in the program will be the Paducah Tilghman High School Navy Junior R.O.T.C. color guard, Tilghman Band of Blue trumpet player Arianna Mundy, and the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit - Paducah's response boat crew.
