MAYFIELD - A new grocery store is scheduled to open in the Mayfield Marketplace shopping center May 8.
Ruler Foods will open its fourth Kentucky store in what was once the old Kroger building. Ruler Foods is owned by Jay-C Foods, a subsidiary of Kroger. The majority of grocery items will be Kroger brand products, according to Mark Belleville, executive director of merchandising for Jay-C Foods.
"We will have everything that a family would need," Belleville said. The store keeps its costs down by having customers bag their own groceries. "You put your quarter in for the cart, and then your quarter comes back at the end (when you return your cart)," he said. "We do everything to take the cost out of our system and the savings comes back to the customer."
According to Belleville, a grand opening is planned for 10 a.m. on May 8. Store hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Ruler Foods also has stores in Princeton, Henderson and Glasgow.
Mayfield Mayor Teresa Cantrell said she is excited to have the new business in the shopping center south of town.
"I feel like it will have a huge impact," she said. "We've just about got that shopping center filled up."
Tractor Supply and Big Lots are also located there. Officials are still looking to fill the space formerly occupied by Goodies, Cantrell said.
Crouch Building Associates was the project contractor on the 27,494 square-foot store.
