MURRAY - Murray State's goal once it got into the CollegeInsider.com Tournament was to bring home a championship. The Racers did just that Thursday night with their 65-57 victory over Yale in the CFSB Center.
The Racers (23-11) won the CIT title in their first-ever appearance in the event and won five games to claim the CIT's sixth championship.
Murray State's Cameron Payne, who scored a game-high 24 points and added seven rebounds and six assists, was named the CIT MVP and was joined all the All-Tournament Team by teammate Jarvis Williams, who scored 16 points and went a perfect 8 for 8 from the field.
The Racers trailed just once in the game and used a 10-4 run to take a 65-54 advantage with 50 seconds left in the game on two Payne free throws.
Sapp and the rest of the team credited the CFSB Center crowd of 4,467 with helping them pull off the championship victory.
"This crowd has been amazing," Sapp said. "I talk about it and Tweet it all the time that I love Racer Nation and all the energy they bring. I believe every person that's ever played here will always remember Racer Nation because these fans take over for us at some point. It gets to where it's not us playing, but our fans playing through us. They show us so much support and you've got to love it. They helped us get this tournament win and we love them."
