BROOKPORT, Ill. - An apparent electrical fire caused minor damage to the home of Mayor John Klaffer on Thursday morning.
Police Chief John Barr said he was nearby when the call was received about 8 a.m. and was the first to respond to the home, 301 Margrave St. Barr said the fire apparently started on the stove, and was brought under control with a fire extinguisher.
No injuries were reported.
The mayor's wife had left for work, the chief said, and Klaffer's daughter had arrived to assist her father, who is recovering from a serious wreck in November. That wreck came two weeks after a tornado devastated the city Nov. 17.
"When it rains, it pours, and it's been constantly raining," said Barr of the recent troubles facing the town and mayor. "We can't catch a break. We get some good weather and now we get this."
The mayor's health is improving, the police chief said, but Klaffer is facing two more surgeries as a result of his injuries. An acting mayor was appointed for the March city council meeting, Barr said, and a similar move may be necessary for the April meeting.
