Pope County wreck kills driver, injures 4

Staff report

A two-vehicle wreck in Pope County, Ill., killed one driver and injured the other occupants of both vehicles Sunday afternoon, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

A 2007 Dodge Caravan was headed north on Ill. 145 - a half-mile south of Bay Valley Road - when the driver reportedly lost control and the vehicle started spinning. It entered the path of a southbound black 2014 Jeep Wrangler.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as Elizabethtown, Ill., resident Tamela Conn, 44, was killed in the 4:31 p.m. crash. A 14-year-old girl with Conn suffered what police called a "non-incapacitating injury."

The occupants of the Jeep, residents of Metropolis, Ill., were also injured. The driver, Damon Acuff, 45, suffered an "incapacitating injury," and the two passengers - Tracy Acuff, 40, and an 8-year-old girl - sustained less serious injuries.

All occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts. No charges have been filed, and the cause of the wreck was listed as "exceeding safe speeds due to weather condition."
