Graves man faces charges after leaving scene

Staff report

A Graves County man faces charges after he left the scene of a collision on Saturday, according to the Graves County Sheriff's Department.

Police said officers responded to a single-vehicle wreck near the 1100 block of Macedonia Church Road in Mayfield. The caller told police that the driver, a man wearing red pants and a white T-shirt, had left his vehicle and walked into the nearby woods. An empty bottle of liquor was found inside the vehicle, police said.

Deputies checked the home of the vehicle's registered owner, Shirley Nesler of Mayfield, but were unable to speak to Nesler. Later that day, police found Michael Goins, 28, of Graves County walking northbound on Macedonia Church Road. Goins had marks consistent with air bag burns on his body, according to the news release from the sheriff's department.

Police then contacted Nesler again. She said the car which is driven by her son was missing Saturday morning. Goins was at the Nelser home on Friday night but was gone along with the car Saturday morning, police said.

Goins denied any knowledge of the vehicle collision. He faces charges of theft of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident. Additional charges could follow. He was taken to the Graves County Jail, according to the news release.
