LBL still not ready to reopen

Staff report

Facilities and offices at the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area were scheduled to reopen to the public today, but following road assessments, officials announced Wednesday that the reopening has been postponed.

LBL Area Supervisor Tina Tilley said in a statement that facilities may not open this week.

"Woodlands Trace has not been treated at all," Tilley said, "and roads leading into the facilities, as well as the parking areas, remain ice covered."

Tilley said LBL staff is working to clear those areas, and the recreation area will provide status updates on lbl.org.

Turkey Bay, LBL's off-highway vehicle area, also remains closed. The release said roads through LBL are heavily covered in ice and snow, and advises travelers to use extreme caution.

Because of soil saturation, the release warns, ice-covered trees and limbs are falling throughout LBL, and travelers are advised to stay off the recreation area's roads if possible until temperatures stay above freezing.

People also can call 270-924-2000 or 800-525-7077 for more information. Updates are also posted to the LBL Twitter accounts: @LBLScreechOwl and @LandBtwnLakes.
