When a passerby saw flames and heard movement coming from inside a Reidland trailer, he feared the worst.
But the homeowners were absent and no injuries were reported Wednesday evening when the trailer, located at 175 Rosebower Church Road, caught fire for unknown reasons, said Rick Archer, chief of the Reidland Fire Department.
Jeremy Griffin, who lives near the home, said he saw a small flame coming through the back window of the trailer as he was headed out to eat. He pulled over and called 911 around 5:45 p.m. After he heard noises coming from the trailer, he tried to open the front door, but found it locked, he said.
McCracken County Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Jones arrived at the fire a short time later and busted in a window with the closest object at hand - a weed eater.
"I hollered ... but nobody answered," Jones said. "It's a bad feeling when you hear something but you can't get inside the door." The source of the noise hadn't been officially identified, he added.
Archer said around 6:30 p.m. that he had not yet entered the building, where firefighters were still working, and did not know the extent of the damage or in what room the fire had started.
The Hendron and Possum Trot-Sharpe fire departments also assisted at the scene.
