Tilghman speech team wins regional tournament

For the second consecutive year Paducah Tilghman High School's Speech and Forensic Team won the Murray Region High School Speech Team tournament, held Saturday at Calloway County High School.

Twenty students competed in 30 events and scored points in 26. The team ended with 72 points, over second place Murray High's 65. Other teams scoring points were Calloway County, 63; Graves County, 45; Marshall County, 44; Crittenden County, 13; McCracken County, 6; and Henderson County, 3.

Sophomore Micheal Hassel led Tilghman with 13 points and Region Champion titles in Humorous Interpretation, and with 9th grade partner Michael Ellen Walden, Duo Interpretation. With senior partner Cade Perfili, he placed 4th in Improvisational Duo.

Senior Yasmine Martinez had 11 points. She and fellow senior Alexis Ash won 3rd in Improvisational Duo. She took 4th in Prose and 6th in Poetry.

Ash won Region Champion in Dramatic Interpretation, 7th overall in poetry and contributed 9 points to the final score. Perfili also scored nine points. In additional to the 4th place Improvisational Duo finish with Hassel he placed 4th in Original Oratory and Impromptu Speaking.

Tilghman's scores were balanced with points by Michael Ellen Walden, 8; Reed Harriman, Region Runner-up, Broadcasting, 5; Lakyn Fulton, 3rd, Prose, 5; Tristen Miller, 3rd Storytelling, 4; Claire Kelly, Humorous Interpretation and Duo Interpretation, 4.

Adding 3 points each were Cassie Arboleda, 3rd in Oratorical Declamation, and Jack Daniels, 4th in Broadcasting. Caroline Meiners added 2 points, 1 in each Duo Interpretation and Storytelling. Also contributing one point each were Lilly Burba, Dramatic Interpretation; Palmer Stroup, Impromptu; Reagen Davidson, Storytelling, and Carter Vaughn, Prose.

In addition, the team earned 237 National Speech and Debate Association points. Cason Walden and Hasaan Ali contributed to the National Speech and Debate Association points, resulting in every participant scoring.

Points earned at the tournament advance Lakyn Fulton to the National Speech and Debate Association's "Degree of Excellence," and Caroline Meiners to a "Degree of Honor." Team member Will Hancock, District Champion of the recent American Legion Oratorical Contest, advanced from a "Degree of Superior Distinction" to "Outstanding Distinction."

The team will advance to the state tournament at the University of Kentucky March 14-15.
