Board sets superintendent hiring timeline

The McCracken County School Board has set a timetable, hoping to hire a superintendent by the end of March.

It met Monday afternoon in a work session led by Kentucky School Boards Association representative Butch Canty to discuss the search, setting meeting dates.

The first step includes the selection of the superintendent screening committee, composed of school district, parent, community and board representatives. Nominations are being taken with the goal of a council in place within a week, Canty said.

He said the job posting is advertised nationally on the KSBA website and the applications will close on March 3. The board will then meet with the selected committee on March 6 to discuss desired qualifications and mandatory criteria. The group will then begin to screen applications.

The next step includes reference checks, with two members of the committee checking each applicant's primary, those listed on his or her resume, and secondary, other professional colleagues not included on the resume. Two additional screening meetings are set for mid-March to narrow the list, according to Canty.

The group will present names of three to five finalists March 19 to the board. Additional recommendations, outside the screening council, can be made by board members and invited for interviews. The board will then conduct in-person interviews of several hours with each candidate the week of March 24 to March 28 before making a selection by March 28.

The board plans to designate a spokesman for the superintendent search process at the next board meeting. Current Superintendent Nancy Waldrop announced in December that she plans to retire when her contract ends June 30.
