SIU: Most of 250 computers found

Associated Press

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University has accounted for most of the more than 250 computers that an audit noted were missing last summer, an official with the Carbondale campus said.

David Crane, an assistant provost and chief information officer, said an initial search recovered 76 of the 256 computers that had been listed as missing. Crane said a later search turned up 61 more computers, with most of the remaining computers found to have been transferred to surplus.

A report last June by the Illinois Auditor General's Office put the value of the computers at more than $400,000 and said the university had no procedure in place to assess whether those computers contained confidential information.

But Crain insisted most of the computers - among more than 15,000 on the campus - were at least a decade old and didn't carry much value. He blamed the lack of accounting for the computers on the university's lack of a proper inventory system.

"Some of the computers were lost and not located, but we believe it was a very minor amount," he said.
