BROOKPORT, Ill. - Inmates from the Vienna Correctional Center are helping with tornado cleanup effort in southern Illinois.
The workers from the Dixon Springs Impact Incarceration Program spent time Thursday and Friday clearing trash and debris from the Ohio River community of Brookport.
Program superintendent Jason Henton says the impact incarceration program is designed to encourage non-violent offenders to get involved in community service.
Inmates who participate in the program can also get their sentences reduced.
Three people died near Brookport when a tornado touched down in the small community of about 1,000 residents on Nov. 17. It stayed on the ground for about 11 miles and was one of about two dozen twisters that rolled across Illinois that day.
