ESPN station off the air until mid-September

Staff report

Thursday, September 06, 2007

ESPN 1560 won’t be back on the air until roughly mid-September, when the station expects to have a new transmitter in place.

“Our old transmitter bit the dust Friday night, and we felt the need to invest in a new one,” said Gary Morse, general manager for parent company Bristol Broadcasting.

“The new one should be here by the middle of next week, and then it has to be installed,” he said. “I hope our listeners will have patience with us, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

Morse couldn’t readily estimate how many people listen to the AM dial sports channel.

“It’s definitely a significant, loyal audience,” he said. “It’s amazing how many people really depend on ESPN Radio.”

ESPN 1560 is one of several area radio stations owned by Bristol, with local offices off Old Mayfield Road.

Morse said Bristol also will apply to the Federal Communications Commission “for some changes in our transmission system that will improve things, but it takes a while to go through that application process.”
