Kentucky releases candidate numbers

In Kentucky, 640 candidates filed to run in the May primary election following the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline, according to a

press release from the office of Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

There will be 37 contested primaries for legislative offices filed through the Secretary of State including two for U.S. senator,

four for U.S. representative, six for state senator and 25 for state representative, along with many other county and city

races. Drawings for ballot position in primary elections will be held in local filing offices at 2 p.m. today, according to

the news release.

"More than double the number of candidates who filed with my office in 2012 are seeking public office this year and more than

4,800 candidates filed statewide to run in the primary" Grimes said.

Individuals seeking to run on the Independent ticket, for most partisan offices, must file a statement of candidacy form by

April 1 and a petition of nomination by Aug. 12. A complete list of candidates is available on the website at -
