Search the classified section of the newspaper. Do you see any items for sale that would be helpful on a camping trip? Circle the items. What is the highest priced item? What is the lowest priced item?

Dad tells Woody they will leave for the trip the next morning when the sun comes up? In September, what time does the sun typically come up?

Unscramble the following words.  Put the letter that matches each number in the blanks at the bottom to answer the question.  Hint:  all 5 scrambled words appear in Chapter 2.

Question: In addition to a bacon sandwich, what does Woody like to eat for breakfast?

Woody says he has a "hankering" for a bacon sandwich. What does hankering mean?

Compare and contrast Woody and Chloe's backpack. Who made the wisest choices? Of all the items in Woody's backpack, what was his smartest choice? What was his poorest choice? Why?

Woody packs his harmonica in his backpack. How is a harmonica played?

Search the classified section of your newspaper. Are there any harmonicas for sale? If so, how much do they cost? What other musical instruments are for sale?

Chloe packs a first aid kit. What do you think you would find in a first aid kit? Look at the illustration of Chapter 2. Do you see the first aid kit? How can you recognize the kit without the words written on it?

Woody and Chloe love to play games ’Äì and they love picnics. One of the games the pups played was The Alphabet Game. As a class, play The Alphabet Game. Go around the room and have each person name something you would take on a picnic. Start with A and go straight through Z. In the spirit of friendly competition, can your class complete The Alphabet Game in 3 minutes?

Make sure you are able to define all 6 words. Once you know the definition, use your imagination and create a short story. You must use all 6 words in your story.

Woody says "Mom rides shotgun." What does "riding shotgun" mean?

Woody noticed his map included the letters N, S, W, and E. What do those letters stand for?

Woody also learns that the sun rises in the east. Where does the sun set each day?

Using a map, find 2 majors cities. Once you have located the cities, answer the following questions:
How many inches apart are the two cities?
How many miles apart are the cities? How do you know? (Hint ’Äì look for a tiny number.)
How many different roads connect the two cities?

Draw a map of your classroom. Include a legend. Make sure you include emergency exits.

Woody sees a road sign with a reindeer crossing the road. What other road signs could Woody see while traveling?

Browsing the newspaper, see if there are any houses for sale. Do any of the houses have an address of a major highway? (Example: 451 Highway 66)

The Dictionary Game

Play The Dictionary Game with your class. Have the teacher put each of the words above on a separate index card. Each student needs his/her own dictionary for the game. Have one student pull out one index card and read the word. The rest of the class will search the dictionary to find the word. The first one that finds the word will stand up and read the definition aloud. That student will then pick a card from the pile and read another word for their classmates to find.

Woody learns that communication is very important. Make a list of different ways you can communicate with others.

Woody refers to "Mr. Webster." Who is Mr. Webster?

Woody imagined himself as Daniel Boone. Pretend you are Daniel Boone. Write a letter to your family explaining your life as a trailblazer. What are you eating? Where are you sleeping? What part of the country are you traveling?

Woody and Chloe love to sing and play Name That Tune. What are your favorite songs to sing? If your class has extra time, play Name That Tune. Can you stump your classmates like Woody stumped his family?

Explain the difference between poisonous and venomous.

Chloe explained the snake they encountered was non-venomous because it one one color and had a spoon-shaped head. What are some characteristics of venomous snakes?

Make a list of venomous and non-venomous snakes from our region. Why are snakes important to the environment?

Compare and contrast a human's habitat and a snake's habitat. Would you like to live in a snake's habitat?

Woody wondered if the author interviewed snakes. Pretend you are newspaper journalist and you are preparing to interview a park ranger for an upcoming story on campgrounds. Create 5 questions you would ask the ranger during the interview.

Help Chloe Find Woody

Start at Chloe’Äôs paintbrush and follow the maze until you reach Woody’Äôs harmonica.
